Nearly 80 years ago, beach-goers hitting a worn tennis ball against the sides of wooden jetties drove the New York Parks Department to build community handball courts in city parks, explains the U.S. Wall Ball Association. In modern times, wall ball is now a professional sport played at athletic centers throughout the country. Politicians recently joined Dmitry Druzhinsky, co-founder of MatchPoint NYC, a premier health and fitness complex in Brooklyn, for the annual Pro Wall Ball Tournament. The renowned competition – dubbed the “Battle of the Boroughs,” raises awareness of public health along with youth empowerment. The winners took home a trophy and a year of gloating rights.
